Illustration Friday-Choose

Click image for a larger view.

This is my entry for IF's "choose" topic. More hands! Imagine that.

Drew my vector lines, painted my background, blah, blah, blah. Want to know more, just ask!

Created this today, Friday, just minutes before midnight.

Thanks to all for the encouraging comments. Encouragement is so important. And in case you have polite, contructive feedback, I do indeed want that too.

And if you're reading this, I'd encourage ANYONE stopping by to leave a comment of some sort, even anonymously.l I often wonder who really stops by... Don't be a stranger.

Genial and deep concept! I like so much the combination of the line-art with the painting texture.

I like how you draw the hands. Too bad I didn't get to see your work at Open gallery show (I do live in Southern California) - hope to see more of your work!

Best,

Shiho

Nicely done and another great use of very powerful words. Good take on the theme.

Very beautiful!
I love the contrast between the more smooth and clean objects in the front and the rougher, and beautifully expressive background.
What's especially neat about your work is how much you keep improving.
Inspiring! :)

BTW you mean you didn't do the linework in graphite pencil first? You do use some reference? Did you brainstorm with some thumbnails before choosing the right idea? How do you go about coming up with the solution after recieving the theme?
Sorry about the many questions, you can choose what and how and if to answer/reveale :)

The hands are a nice idea in this sense. They work as the second part of the "binomio fantastico". That is a technique I read about in the book "La grammatica della fantasia, introduzione all'arte di inventare storie" by Gianni Rodari (I read it in Italian but apparently it exist in english as well as " The Grammar of Fantasy: An Introduction to the Art of Inventing Stories"). It is a collection of games/methods to come up with ideas, especially for children, but can work for adults and/or creatives as well. For instance, he suggests to start creating by finding two very different words, chosen randomly, to sort of put the immaginatuon machine in motion. That is, in order to bridge the gap between the two words, our mind comes up with stories. We can also put different verbs and such between the two to put them in different relations and avoid the relapse towards the obvious (a good example of lateral thinking).

So your use of the concept "hands" is very interesting in this sense. You decide one pole of the "binomio fantastico" and use the Illustration Friday theme as the second.
Great! :)

Have a nice day.

Great work as usual, good hands, like the grung-y background, and the message of it left somewhat up to user interpretation, not clobbering them over the head.

A wise choice! These are wondeful, thoughtful illustrations, Scott. The "spices and herbs" virtue, the "blanket" knitting hands (reminds me of my mom), "fairy tales & legends" book.

Masterful interpretive work, superb aesthetic. Like Lolo, I'm glad I enlarged, too. The details count!
Thanks for commenting on my IF illo. I was starting the believe it was 'too conceptual' to be appreciated. Feedback is helpful! And to see this, which is also symbolic, is great.

Wonderful Scott. I teach Christian Ed on Sundays to a group of Kindergarten and First Graders. We study values and virtues or "faith traits" all year long. We include generosity, patience, kindness, obedience,
compassion, cooperation and many more. All are good choices. I like your choice above.

What? A picture including hands? What a surprise! This is great, a nice idea for the theme. I can imagine a series of the other (not so good-guy hands) picking up the other jars... Great work again!

My friend Scott, four blogs now!! Wow, you are the man. I've known you had talent but the rest of the art world is just finding out. I love reading the nice comments everyone leaves you because they are all right, you are that good at what you do. Your web designs are out of this world too. Thanks for sharing your work with us. If you still want to draw my hands on any upcoming projects, just let me know. Besides, I am still waiting for you to show me how to draw a circle!! I can't even draw one. Yeah, I know, your still waiting for me to send you some of my stories. They will be done soon, I promise. Listen, call me tomorrow morning after 9am if you can. I need to talk to you about some projects I'm working on, and of course, I welcome your advice and opinions as usual. Thanks for being my good friend these past few years. We've have had so much fun when we travel around town and quietly study the people around us. You always come up with something that I didn't know you were capable of doing, and I'm always impressed by your talent. Your pal, down the road,
Mike

Very beautifully executed! Although I really admire the art for itself, I especially like the message. So many choices we have to make when it comes to values.

Very Nice, goes well with the knitting one...would be great to see these large scale and hung in a gallery!

I also used your paper airplane pic as an example for a message/audience exercise. The students had to design a piece using only 3 panels, no text, telling how to do something. One of the great things about IF is seeing other people's work and being inspired to make new projects.

Thanks for visiting, Scott!

Yes, that is a dolphin on the screen. I used it for reference since the Needlenose Dolphin is difficult to photograph in the wild. Usually it's found working on a boat, but is quite shy, and will swim away once spotted. They do fabulous work, and are quite modest...

Great work as usual!
