Illustration Friday-Neighbor

Click images for a larger view.

This is my entry for Illustration Friday's "neighbor" topic. Still trying to do sets. Good practice. These are a bit of a departure for me, style wise, especially the one with the bridge. Both started as pencil sketches. Then drew my vector lines trying to keep the casual nature of a pencil sketch. Painted some textures, and compiled everything in Photoshop. Both were created today, Sunday, specifically for IF.

What do you think?

Scott

I agree with the Doc, great background texture. I also like the limited depth in the second one-the way the bridge comes away from the little houses.

I would like to see a bird walking that bridge. I like the colors on these. The texture in the background looks like a dense forest.

I really like the 2nd one. The bridge is cool. I like the idea of it and I like drawings that have a sense of impracticality (?) about them. Nice style, too.

I like the birds picture better, though both are nice. But the birds' houses lean toward one another (from their anchor points) while the mountaintop houses lean away from one another (from their anchor points). Also I like the element of visible inhabitants, also looking toward one another. Both those factors work to make the birds' picture warmer and more neighborly.

Hey, Scott! Very nice background textures... Looking down your blog, I see you've been working on set pieces and incorporating lots of cool textures. This colors in this one work especially well in contrast to the blue back. Thanks for the nice comment on my post. I followed up with a small explanation for the extended time off.

I like these Scott! I of course like the one with the cute birds a bit more because they bring "life" to the drawing, and also represent neighbors. I love the position of them too. On the other illo, the bridge is a fantastic idea and I like the perspective of it. Working in sets is a cool idea! I may have to try that soon :)

I'm tempted to just look at these for a long time. The scene with the birdhouses and the two little birds, set against that amazing green background, and the fascinating bridge connecting the two birdhouses and without they might never meet, no way out of their situation, good neighbors, gonna kinda have to be. Great stuff, and I am very curious what inspired the bottom painting.
